The context

NSW Health is Australia’s largest provider of healthcare services. As Marketing Manager, I was asked to create a new website dedicated to careers at NSW Health, with a special focus on highlighting lesser-known roles, such as corporate and cleaning positions, alongside clinical careers.

The approach

Research

I started by putting myself in the user’s shoes. Seek’s Laws of Attraction study, which surveys Australian workers across every industry about what they want from their jobs, helped me identify the factors that mattered most to each profession featured on the site. I used these insights to set the priority of the copy and shape the user flow.

I also studied standout careers websites in Australia and overseas, both inside and outside healthcare, to understand what the best in the market were doing and what our audience needed to see.

Prototyping

Using Figma, I created detailed website design variations that met brand requirements. To make sure HR felt included in the process, I travelled to their offices to present the prototypes in person and gather their feedback.

Feedback and refinement

I presented a second version, shaped by HR’s input, to the Executive Director and incorporated her feedback into the design and copy. Throughout, I advocated for keeping the flexible working section front and centre, as the research showed it was highly valued by our audience.

For final approval, I prepared a third version, presented as a PDF to suit the Executive Director’s preference, then worked with the Head of Websites to publish the site.

Testing

After publishing, the copy structure was changed so that the benefits section opened with a survey instead of the approved flexible working content. Through diplomatic, evidence-based communication, I successfully reinstated the original structure.

The results

  • 33,000 website visits in the first 6 months
  • A careers site that showcased the full range of roles at NSW Health, not just clinical ones
  • Stakeholder buy-in from HR through to executive level

What I learned

Large web projects succeed or stall with their stakeholders. This project taught me how to work closely with a wide range of people, from HR teams to executives and web leads, and how to bring them along while still advocating for what the evidence says users need.
